Glass vs. Plastic: Why Glass Is the Best Choice for Packaging Your Food

When it comes time to choose packaging for your product—whether you’re a honey producer in the Sierra de Cádiz, a jam maker in La Alpujarra, or a small EVOO producer in Córdoba—the choice between glass and plastic may seem like just a matter of price. However, there are compelling reasons that go far beyond cost per unit.

In this article, we analyze the main differences between glass and plastic for food packaging, from food safety to environmental impact, so you can make an informed decision.

 1. Food safety: glass doesn’t contaminate

Glass is an inert material: it doesn’t react with food or release chemical substances, regardless of temperature or acidity. This makes it the material of choice in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Plastic, on the other hand, can release microplastics and compounds such as bisphenol A (BPA) or phthalates under certain conditions—especially with acidic or fatty foods, or when exposed to heat. Although many food-grade plastics are designed to minimize this risk, their level of safety is never comparable to that of glass.

For products such as honey, jams, oil, or artisanal preserves—where quality and purity are key selling points—glass is the logical choice.

2. Preservation of flavor and aroma

Glass is completely non-porous: it does not absorb odors or flavors from the outside, nor does it transfer them to the product inside. This ensures that your raspberry jam will taste exactly like raspberry—not like its container—throughout its shelf life.

Plastic can absorb aromas over time, especially if reused, which may alter the sensory perception of the final product.

3. Image and perception of quality

It’s no coincidence that premium products—PDO olive oils, mountain honeys, gourmet preserves—are almost always packaged in glass. Glass conveys quality, transparency, and authenticity. It allows the product to be seen clearly, building consumer trust.

In artisan markets across Seville, Málaga, Granada, or Almería, a well-presented glass jar can make the difference between making a sale or not. Visual perception matters—a lot.

4. Sustainability and recyclability

Glass is 100% recyclable indefinitely without loss of quality. Each ton of recycled glass saves raw materials (sand, soda ash, limestone) and reduces CO₂ emissions from the manufacturing process.

Plastic, while theoretically recyclable, has much lower recycling rates in practice, and many types can only be recycled a limited number of times before degrading. In Spain, only around 30% of generated plastic is actually recycled.

European regulations are also moving in favor of glass: the revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) foresees more ambitious recycling targets and increasing restrictions on single-use plastics in the food sector.

5. Reuse: the customer as an ambassador

A quality glass jar has a second life. Consumers reuse it to store spices, legumes, make homemade preserves, or even as a candle holder. This extended lifecycle is a real and tangible sustainability argument you can use in your brand communication.

Moreover, if you offer customers the option to return empty jars for refilling (a “deposit and return” model), you create customer loyalty and a strong differentiating factor in today’s market.

So, is glass always better?

For the vast majority of artisanal products—preserves, honey, sauces, oils, natural cosmetics—the answer is yes. Plastic may be suitable in very specific cases where weight or shatter-resistance is critical (transport, outdoor activities), but when it comes to perceived quality, food safety, and sustainability, glass clearly wins.
